Le Pen Faces New Criminal Charges For Sending Pictures of ISIS Abuses On Twitter

libertyWe have been discussing  the rollback of free speech in France where writers and speakers are now routinely prosecuted for what would be protected political or religious speech in the United States, including the recent conviction of Robert Menard, mayor of Beziers and a top adviser to Menard was found guilty of inciting hatred against Muslims for complaining about the increasing numbers of Muslim children in French schools.  Now Le Pen is again being charged herself.  She has been accused of the “distribution of violent images” for sending out  tweets depicting ISIS propaganda and violence. It is again an example of France’s denial of free speech and particularly political speech.  Regardless of how one feels about Le Pen’s views, these were core political expressions.

“De Nile Is Not Just A River In Egypt” . . . But It Is The Cleanest

Nile_River_and_delta_from_orbitNow this is a case only Stuart Smiley can truly understand. An Egyptian “court” has sentenced well-known singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab to six months in prison and a fine for telling a joke. Sherine, as she is known, simply made an oft-hand remark that people should not drink out of the Nile.  For that, she was sentenced for “insulting the state” by suggesting that the Nile is polluted.  As Stuart Smiley said on SNL’s Daily Affirmation, “De Nile ain’t just a river in Egypt.”

Iran Charges Women With “Inciting Prostitution” For Removing Their Hijabs in Protests

In the latest clip, the woman is seen raising the headscarf above her head by a set of traffic lights in TehranWe have previously discussed the unparalleled bravery of the women fighting discriminatory Islamic law requiring them to wear veils and limiting their freedoms due to their gender.  This is particularly true of the women engaged in protests over compulsory headscarves in Iran.  Now however the Islamic regime is cracking down and not just arresting women but charging them with “inciting prostitution.”  It is the perfect sexist charge to go with deeply sexist legal system. A woman who asserts her most basic right to expression and religious choices is treated by the Islamic government as fostering prostitutes.

Dems Call For New Regulations And Fines To Force Sites To Crackdown On Suspicious Posters

960px-Amy_Klobuchar,_official_portrait,_113th_CongressOn Sunday,Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar joined the growing call for new regulation of Internet speech, including the imposition of fines on sites that fail to remove posters and comments of suspected “bots.”  While the true impact of the Russian trolls and bots is being hotly debated (and I admit that I am skeptical), Democrats are calling for measures that worry many of us in the free speech community.

Even Without Collusion, Serious Threats Remain For Trump In The Russian Investigation

440px-Director_Robert_S._Mueller-_III-1donald_trump_president-elect_portrait_croppedBelow is my column in USA Today looking at the array of threats still present for the Trump White House even if collusion fades as part of the Russian investigation.  There still could be evidence discovered or disclosed on collusion. However, after multiple indictments, pleas, and a year of investigation, we have not yet seen any credible criminal allegations linked to collusion.  As many on the blog know, I have long been skeptical about the real likelihood of a criminal case based on collusion or obstruction against President Donald Trump. However, even if collusion does recede as a threat, there remain significant areas of risk for the President.

British Woman Leaves “Vile” Note On Ambulance . . . Police Arrest Woman For Public Disorder

1519059712419

We have repeatedly discussed how Great Britain has been in a free fall from the criminalization of speech to the expansion of the surveillance state.  The alarming rollback on free speech rights in the West, particularly striking in England ( here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here).  Now, a new case shows how ambiguous laws are being used to criminalize conduct that was once viewed as simply rude or obnoxious.  A woman has been arrested for leaving a furious note on an ambulance of the West Midlands Ambulance Service for parking in a reserved space during an emergency call.  The note is disgraceful, but the arrest shows how England has plunged head-long into the waters of speech criminalization and regulation.

Evergreen College To Drop It’s Racially Exclusionary “Day Of Absence” Event As Applications Drop Significantly

theevergreenstate640_c0-0-640-373_s885x516Many of us were critical of the decisions of Evergreen State College in not just its holding of it “Day of Absence” event were whites were expected to leave campus but its treatment of Biology professor Bret Weinstein who was hounded out of the college (and later received a $500,000 settlement for his mistreatment).  The school has also been criticized for racial exclusions of authors in the school newspaper.  Now there is a report that Evergreen could be heading in the same direction of the University of Missouri, which has seen a massive drop in applications in the wake of controversial decisions in race-related controversies.  Evergreen reportedly expects a 20 percent decrease in admissions even as it replaces its “Day of Absence” event. There is now a proposed “inclusion” course.  The Administration and faculty were remarkably slow in adjusting its course, which seemed to abandon Weinstein and embrace racial exclusionary principles.   It is still early to determine if Evergreen will experience the disastrous “Mizzou Effect.”

Princeton Course on “Oppressive Symbolism” Cancelled After Protest Over Professor Saying The N-Word

220px-Princeton_shield.svgWe recently discussed the protests over Anthropology professor Lawrence Rosen using the word “ni**er” in a class on offensive terms to discuss the free speech issues surrounding language.  I supported his right to use such terms and questioned where the line would be drawn in university classes.  Some faculty however supported the students and now Rosen has cancelled the class.  It is a worrisome development for those concerned about academic freedom.

New Conservative Government In Honduras Moves Toward Criminalizing Internet Speech

250px-Flag_of_Honduras.svg170px-Coat_of_arms_of_Honduras.svgIn case you thought that the greatest threats to free speech in Latin America is coming from the leftist  Maduro regime, Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez is showing that such repressive policies can be found on either end of the ideological spectrum.  The Trump Administration supported Hernandez in his contested election despite widespread questions of election irregularities. Faced with various sites discussing these allegations, Hernandez’ government is pursuing a new and chilling law to criminalize any “hate campaigns” on the Internet.  This is one of our closest allies in Latin America and it has set itself on the course of criminalizing political speech.

Ginsburg (Again) Holds Forth On Politics, Hillary Clinton, and Sexism

225px-ruth_bader_ginsburg_scotus_photo_portraitI have previously criticized Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her continued political comments in speeches to liberal and academic groups.  While not unique on the Court, Ginsburg is something of recidivist in abandoning the long-standing avoidance of political discussions by justices.  Despite repeated controversies in speaking publicly on political issues, Ginsburg is clearly undeterred.  Ginsburg was back this week holding forth on political issues that justices have historically avoided in maintain the integrity of the Court.  As in her 2017 speech, Ginsburg again repeated her view that sexist voters prevented Hillary Clinton from being elected president.

West Virginia Woman Dragged From Legislative Hearing On Drilling Bill After Listing Oil and Gas Donations To The Members

lissaWe recently saw a national outcry over a teacher dragged from a school board meeting for raising concerns over school policies.  Now, the West Virginia House of Delegates is under scrutiny for the treatment of a woman, Lissa Lucas, who appeared at a hearing over a drilling bill and attempted to list the contributions accepted by both Democrats and Republicans from the gas and oil industries.  She also raised an event the night before where the members wined and dined with industry lobbyists.  She was forciably removed from the hearing after Chairman, John Shott (R-Mercer) ruled her comments as non-germane and personal. Many voters would likely disagree and say that the extent of corporate-related money is not relevant to the legislation.

University of Washington Sued Under Policy For Demanding $17,000 In “Security Fees” For Conservative Speaker

download-7The University of Washington  has been sued by the schools College Republicans after it demanded the payment of $17,000 in security fees for the planned speech of Oregon activist Joey Gibson of the Patriot Prayer group. The lawsuit raises an important free speech question in whether schools can effectively bar conservative speakers by insisting that free speech is not free in a financial sense.  The imposition of prohibitive costs on groups like the College Republicans is facially neutral but potentially discriminatory in practice based on the content of speech. It also creates a system that indirectly supports “the heckler’s veto.”

Pakistani Government Warns Media Not To Cover Valentine’s Day As An Offense To Islam

240px-Antique_Valentine_1909_01Pakistan continues to show the world that it remains on the course of Islamic extremism and increasingly intolerant of free exercise and free speech.  Now the Pakistani government is warning media not to cover the increasingly popular Valentine’s Day celebrations.  Islamic clerics have declared the Western holiday to be an offense to Islam.  None of these clerics or government officials appear concerned that there is a far greater danger to Islam if it is threatened by people wanting to exchange Valentines or throwing parties.

O Canada: Trudeau Corrects Woman In Public Forum For Using The Term “Mankind”

Screen Shot 2018-02-06 at 8.43.14 AM.pngWe have been discussing the identification of words as “microaggressions” on college campuses including the now suspect use of the word “mankind.” It appears that the word is moving from micro to macro aggression in Canada where a women was told by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that she should not use the word in her question to him.  He is not alone in correcting such usage.  Recently, a female student was given a lower grade for using “mankind” in a paper.

Iranian Activist Challenges Western “Barbie” Feminism As Veil Protests Continue In Iran

download-5We have previously discussed the courage of women in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and other Muslim nations in fighting sexist rules that prevent them from engaging in basic acts or pursuing their own futures.  As I have said before, these women are the most inspiring civil libertarians of our generation — risking jail and beatings to fight for equality.  That struggle is evident in the dozens of arrests of women in Iran who are pulling off their headscarves in public in Iran to fight for the individual choice in wearing the religious cover.  One activist Masih Alinejab has gone further to denounce Western feminists and reporters who celebrate the selling of a Barbie doll with a veil while giving minimal attention to actual women fighting the mandatory wearing of such items.
