Italian Court: Lobsters Cannot Be Kept On Ice At Restaurants

250px-lobster_nsrwItaly’s highest court handed down a victory for animal rights activists last week that mandates that restaurants can no longer keep lobsters on ice because it causes them unjustifiable suffering.  It is a decision applauded by many who viewed the crustaceans as being subjected to unnecessary discomfort.  As much as a applaud such decisions in favor of animals, it does still leave the rather obvious conflict with the fact that the lobsters are then boiled alive.

Cambridge Faculty Told Not To Use “Genius” and “Brilliance” Because Of Sexist Connotations

I guess Jimmy Neutron will have to live with “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius .  Cambridge University examiners are being told to avoid the words “flair”, “brilliance” and “genius” in the review of student work because these terms are sexist and “carry assumptions of gender inequality.”  It appears Madam Curie was just a really solid researcher.

Ninth Circuit Rules Against Trump . . . Using Trump As Main Witness Against Himself

donald_trump_president-elect_portrait_croppedninth-circuit-logoIt is the presidential version of death by cop.  Recently, I wrote a column on how Trump had become a witness against himself by, again, tweeting highly damaging observations about pending litigation and even contradicting the statements of his own legal team in the immigration order litigation.  As predicted, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit not only ruled against his Administration but relied on his damaging recent tweet to seal the deal.  The lack of message discipline extended to Trump friends this week after his friend, Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy, said Trump was considering firing Mueller: “I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think he’s weighing that option. I think it’s pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.”   The statement sent a chill throughout Congress.  Such a move would not only push Congress to pass a renewal of the Independent Counsel Act but magnify allegations of obstruction.

Couple Criminally Charged After Burning Koran On Videotape

We have been discussing the rapid erosion of free speech in Great Britain with expanding criminalization of speech deemed insulting or offensive to any group or person.  The most recent case involved a couple shown in a videotape burning a copy of the Koran.  As offensive and hateful as this act is, it is still an exercise of free speech in my view.

Meet Gavel: The World’s Greatest Hope For Salvation

puppy-fired-too-nice-governor-queensland-png-1496934565Despite the depressing news domestically and internationally, there is proof that there is still hope for the world.  Gavel has found a home.  Gavel flunked out of police canine academy in Queensland, Australia, for being too friendly.  It was a disappointment because Gavel came from are “family bloodline” of top German Shepard police dogs. The problem is that Gavel just wanted to be friends . . . with everyone.

The Vanishing Woman: Saudi Arabian Ad Substitutes Image Of Inflatable Ball For Mother In Pool Picture

4131F54200000578-4580510-image-m-34_1496835530873We have previously discussed how woman magically disappear in Saudi Arabia, including  ads for companies like IKEA. (We have seen the same vanishing in Orthodox Jewish publication).  Now Saudi Arabia is accused of replacing a picture of a mother with a beach ball in this advertisement to protect Muslim sensibilities.  At least these kids can say “Mom was a real ball on vacation.”

Prime Minister May Pledges To Curtail Human Rights If Necessary To Combat Extremists

Theresa_MayBritish Prime Minister Theresa May has declared that she is prepared to dispense with human rights laws if they hinder her efforts to fight terrorism.  The statement is a chilling example of how politicians are willing to take a hatchet to civil liberties and privacy in response to attacks. The more chilling fact is that many citizens will willingly part with their freedoms based on such promises of greater security.  May has already pledged to curtail free speech on the Internet to fight extremists.

May Calls For Free Speech Controls on the Internet In Response To London Attacks

Theresa_MayWe have previously discussed how politicians often attack free speech and other rights to show that they are “tough” on terror after attacks.  Prime Minister Theresa May however may have set a record.  May did not hesitate in immediately blaming the Internet and calling for government regulation of free speech to combat attacks like the one in London.  Of course, if these terrorists were connected to ISIS (or inspired by ISIS), their extremism was not caused by free speech on the Internet.  Indeed, the Internet often allows security to track extremists on the web.

Muslims Arrested For Praying In Myanmar After Closing Of Muslim Schools

7d105fbdbaf8a63bf70b1c645c99ebd1We previously discussed the crushing abuse and discrimination faced by Muslims in Myanmar.  The Rohingya are denied basic rights and face continued violence in the country.  The most recent outrage was the arrest of three Muslims for holding Ramadan prayers in the street.  Recently, their local school was closed by a nationalist mob.

Study: Switching From Coal Would Save 52,000 Lives Annually In The United States

220px-AlfedPalmersmokestacksWe have previously discussed studies that show the number of people killed by pollution each year — a concrete cost rarely discussed in debates like the current outcry over the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Accord.  In a new study published in Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews (DOI: 10.1016/j.rser.2017.05.119), researchers from Michigan Technological University found that switching over to photovotaics from coal would prevent 51,999 premature deaths a year and potentially making as much as $2.5 million for each life saved.  What is interesting is that those people opposing environmental controls clearly do not view themselves in one of these groups of fatalities even though pollution tends to impact everyone fairly evenly.

Swiss Man Found Guilty Of Defamation For “Liking” Facebook Postings

200px-Facebook.svgWe have yet another example of how free speech is being eviscerated in Europe through an assortment of different legal standards.  An unnamed 45-year-old Swiss man is an example of how the defamation laws can have the same impact on free speech. He was convicted of defamation after simply “liking” posts on Facebook that said bad things about Erwin Kessler, the leader of Swiss vegan group Vereins gegen Tierfabriken.

af74dd44faed6bb126b85b8bb88c40ffA If Reece Park could not quite remember how he made it home after his bender the night before, this helpful selfie might refresh his hazy memory.  Tasmanian Constables Natalie Siggins and Jeremy Blyth decided to take Park home and put him to bed after spotting him drunk on the street.  They memorialized the moment for the morning after.

Paris Mayor Calls For Banning Of Black Only Event In Paris

Anne_Hidalgo,_février_2014With Harvard holding its first black-only graduation this year and various schools creating black only dorms and safe spaces, “separate but equal” seems to be on the resurgence in America (something I wrote about ten years ago).  However, Paris mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has stood firm against all forms of discrimination and barred the black feminist festival in the French capital because it is “prohibited to white people.”  She said that racial discrimination in any form or for any purpose will not be tolerated.

Salman Abedi Reportedly Accused Teacher of “Islamophobia” For Discussing Suicide Bombers in Class

download-3We have been discussing the erosion of free speech in England with an ever expanding range of criminalized speech.  Individuals and groups now regularly call police to charge people who say anything deemed offensive or insulting to a race, religion, or group.  It appears suicide bomber Salman Abedi  was among the outraged insulted and filed a complaint with his school over an “Islamaphobic” statement of his teacher in class about . . . you guessed it . . . suicide bombers.

The Rise and Fall of H.R. McMaster

H.R._McMaster_ARCIC_2014One of the most damaged individuals from the various controversies surrounding President Donald Trump has been his National Security Adviser, General H.R. McMaster.  McMaster of course replaced the most damaged individual, General Michael Flynn who is now the subject of multiple investigations.  McMaster was brought in to bring professional and credibility to the position.  He was an excellent choice.  However, the use of McMaster to try (unsuccessfully) to deflect concerns of Trump’s disclosure of highly classified information to the Russians destroyed much of his reputation in Washington.  Now, what remains of that reputation seems to be rapidly evaporating with McMaster’s dismissive “not concerned” response to a high-level advisor (Jared Kushner) reportedly asking the Russians to create a secret, secure communications line  through their embassy or other location.  While that allegation does not appear a criminal violation in and of itself, it would a highly disturbing addition to an already troubling story on the close relations between the Trump officials and the Russians.  The former head of the NSA and CIA under Bush said that such a back channel would be both uncommon and dangerous.
