Doctors’ Union Objects to Surgeon Having to Pay Damages for Losing His Temper in Surgery, Cutting Off Man’s Penis and then Chopping It Into Small Bits

thumb_doctorAnd I thought the AMA was unreasonable on malpractice caps . . . Surgeon Naum Ciomu was operating on patient Nelu Radonescu, 36, to correct a testicular malformation when he suddenly lost his temper. He cut off Radonescu’s penis and then chopped it up into small bits on a nearby operating room table. He then ran out of the operating room. The injustice? The union objects to a court judgment imposing £100,000 in damages to pay to reconstruct the man’s penis from tissue in his arm.

Indian Tribe Sues Researchers For Using Blood Samples to Disprove Religious Beliefs

200px-havasu_falls_1a_mdAn Arizona appeals court has reinstated an interesting lawsuit by the Havasupai Indians who alleged that researchers at the Arizona State University and University of Arizona misused blood samples taken from members of the northern Arizona tribe. The tribe insists that it agreed to the use of blood samples to look into genetic links with the high incidence of diabetes among its members. The tribe lives in an isolated village lies deep in a gorge off the Grand Canyon. Among the claims, the tribe alleges that researchers were using the blood samples to establish that their predecessors migrated to the area — which contradicts the tribe’s religious belief that it originated in the Grand Canyon.
