Marie Jarry, the former second-grade teacher who resigned after making an appearance in a bikini on the “Howard Stern Show,” is suing Southington, Connecticut school officials as well as her union. She has good reason to complain about being fired for an appearance in a swimsuit on a television program on her own time. The increasing enforcement of after-hours codes of conduct by employers should be viewed as a cause of alarm for a society that prides itself on freedom of association and speech.

Justice Stephen G. Breyer was among the clients of Wagner Resource Group that had his personal data made public — after an employee used the firm’s computer to swap music on the file-sharing network LimeWire. It included his name, date of birth, and social security number. As someone who had a former CBS employee steal his identity to buy two Lexus cars, I can sympathize.
It appears that extreme Muslims are not alone in demanding death for those who insult their religion. Some Catholics are threatening the life of Webster Cook who stole a wafer or Eucharist in a baggy to show a friend. He then made a video that now has been being accused by the Catholic Church as a hate crime.

In a curious move, the Bush Administration is now refusing a demand from the duly elected Iraqi government for a date of withdrawal. It appears that we are not done rescuing the Iraqis — no matter what the Iraqis may think. So it appears that a continued open-ended occupation now opposed by a majority of voters, a majority in Congress, and a majority of Iraqis will continue until the White House is satisfied. It appears that all that business about the freely elected government was simply aspirational.
It appears that mere blogging with flogging is not enough. Beheading bloggers will now be the new rage in Persia. In its race back to the Dark Ages, Iran and its Mullahs have written a new law that would put bloggers to death for any writing that is viewed as advocating corruption, prostitution, or desertion of Islam. Such bloggers would be deemed mohareb (an enemy of God) and “corrupt of the earth.” This category of criminals allows the Iranian “courts” to inflict a range of punishment that includes amputations and execution.

In Portland, Maine, a court has annulled an adoption of an adult by a lesbian couple in a dispute over the beneficiaries of the fortune of Thomas Watson, Jr. — founder of International Business Machines (IBM) Corp. His daughter Olive Watson adopted Patricia Spado in 1991 to create something akin to a legal family status. However, they broke up a year later. Spado, however, is far more interested in the status of a child than a spouse with millions at stake.

President Bush has been unsuccessful lately in abridging the Constitution with stinging loses in the last month before the Supreme Court and lower courts. He appears now to be attacking the problem at its source: the Founders. In a July 4th speech at Monticello, Bush cleaned up a famous quote by Jefferson by deleting a line that is viewed as critical of religious superstitions and ignorance. The video of the event and the original quote are below.
A new study concludes that the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law does little in terms of actual military readiness and that openly gay soldiers would not significantly diminish morale or fighting capability in the U.S. military. If raised by reporters, the study could put pressure on Barack Obama, who is trying to move to the right in preparation for the general election. John McCain is expected to support the continuation of the current law.
They are called Black Cat Screech and Scream — a firework that is supposed to make a loud noise with s fountain of fireworks. I almost bought a couple this weekend with a purchase of a huge amount of ordinance for the Fourth of July. What I did not know was that they had been recalled the day before –July 3, 2008. Since the government waited until the day before July 4th, they were still be sold across the country.
