No Briefs, No Ruling: Law Student Strips in Protest of Ruling on Sale of Leavened Bread

180px-fd_1Religious yeshiva student Aryeh Yerushalmi had a novel way of protesting a decision of an Israeli court to allow the sale of leavened grain products. The Court ruled last year that the Israeli law only prohibits the sale of hametz (bread and leavened grain products) in public on Passover. By ruling that stores are closed spaces and not public in that sense, the court loosened up the law. Yerushalmi decided, therefore, to strip in a supermarket in Tel Aviv since it cannot be viewed as “public indecency.”

Unholy Mess at the Holy See: Vatican Rejects Three Candidates For U.S. Ambassador Over Abortion Views

Egyptian Court Bans Literature Journal For Publishing Blasphemous Poem

EgyptA respected literature journal, Ibdaa (or Creativity) has been banned by an Egyptian court for publishing blasphemous poem by poet Helmi Salem that compared God to a villager who feeds ducks and milks cows. It is only the latest crackdown on poets who have used the Koran or references to God in artistic ways.

Lost in Translation: Turkish Anchor Appears in Blackface on Air in Coverage of President Obama

turkishblackfaceThere is a great deal of chatter on the Internet today about an anchor who appears in blackface in the coverage of President Obama’s trip to Turkey. The rough translation from the appearance is “Welcome, Mr. Obama. You took our hearts with your hospitality. We appreciate your kindness. We will do whatever America asks of us, as friends. Now, we ask the same of you.”

Berlusconi Blackout: Italian President Accuses Media of Harming Italy By Covering Gaffes and Promises “Hard Measures”

silvio_berlusconi_29-01-2008Italian President Silvio Berlusconi has secured a reputation as the clown of Europe and, like most circus clowns, he is getting really scary. After the media reported on his latest gaffes, Berlusconi is threatening “hard measures” against the media, saying “The Italian press, with their stories of my gaffes, harm the reputation of Italy.” The idea that it is the press rather than the president at fault is not new. However, for the leader of a free nation to threaten such measures is more than a laughable gaffe.

Pakistani Minister: Video of Flogging of Teen Girl a “Jewish Conspiracy”

defaultAccording to Pakistani Federal Minister Senator Azam Khan Swati of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam the flogging of the 17-year-old girl in Swat was a Jewish conspiracy. He explained that it is the work of Jews aimed at destroying peace in Swat and distorting the image of those Islamists who sport beards and wear turbans.
