Architect Koen Olthuis, of Dutch firm Waterstudio has proposed a rather intriguing floating parks for cities like New York and London that would create a haven for wildlife in urban centers — a park that would be inaccessible to humans that would create a multi-tiered living area for birds, bees, bats and other small animals.

This is a bizarre story. We are all familiar with the island of Montecristo from the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo. If you go to the uninhabited island, however, you are likely to find not the treasure from the book (or Red Beard’s treasure, as has long been rumored to be buried there). What you will find are rats. Lots of rats. One for every square yard of island. Now, the Italian military is planning to literally bomb the island to kill the black rat (Rattus rattus) population — and save the island.

Renowned marine biologist Nancy Black faces 20 years in prison and a half million dollars in fines for allegedly unlawfully feeding killer whales. And no,she didn’t feed them people. Apparently,Black, who’s been featured on PBS, Animal Planet, and National Geographic has been charged with running afoul of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The charges stem from a 2005 research trip in which Black filmed a gray humpback whale and a pack of killer whales swimming nearby. She’s accused of feeding the killer whales and then altering a video of the “crime.” Here’s her lawyer’s account of the heinous attack on the environment.

One of my former students sent along this interesting case. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan has taken the relatively rare step of blocking a commercial by Clorox Company for its Fresh Step kitty litter. Rakoff agreed with lawyers from Arm & Hammer that the commercial would do the company “irreparable harm” by publishing misleading information about cat litter boxes — and cats generally. The claims did not pass the smell test for the Court which rejected the methodology used by Clorox.

The accused, Huang Guang, is deputy director of agriculture in Guangdong’s Bajia township and was in a business dispute with Long.

The McKinlay family of Yelm, Washington, are celebrating more than a holiday this Christmas. Their 8-month-old Yorkshire Terrier-Shih Tzu mix, Scamp, bolted from their yard and was struck by a car. When the McKinlay’s arrived the dog was bleeding, his eyes were fixed, and he wasn’t breathing. They carried their lifeless pet from the scene and placed him under a wheel barrow intent on burial the next day. Heart-broken, the grandparents of six-year-old twins, were wondering how they would tell the pet-adoring kids about what had happened. They finally settled on just telling them that Scamp had gone to heaven. Tearfully, the two young girls accepted the dog’s fate. “It was real sad to watch them crying over their dog and drawing pictures. We were trying not to cry,” Ms. McKinlay told the local TV News Channel, KOMO4.
