A New York mother, Tehmina Haque, has sued American Airlines for injuries suffered by her son when he came into contact with peanut oil on a flight due to the in-flight peanuts. Even though her son did not go into anaphylactic shock due to his severe allergy, she sued the airline for negligence. While this is not the strongest case due to the lack of a more tangible injury, it is not a frivolous issue. I remain shocked that airlines serve peanuts given the relatively high number of people (including many children) with potentially life-threatening reactions to the product.

A friend recently sent me the new parody targeting Hillary Clinton using a scene from a film of Hitler in the bunker with his generals. It was very familiar. It is a scene from Der Untergang (The Downfall). Previously, a friend sent me the same clip dubbed to attack the Dallas Cowboys. Both clips are shown below. It seems that historical revisionism has found a voice in American politics and sports.

A Texas couple is suing the city of Denton, Texas for $206,000 for negligently euthanizing their dog. Shawn Snider and Beth Bayless-Snider are seeking recovery for loss of future breeding opportunities and emotional pain and suffering for the loss of their 3-year-old black Labrador, Amicus.

In a serious attack on both free speech and free press, the Singapore government has arrested a California blogger (and U.S. citizen) after Gopalan Nair, 58, criticized Justice Belinda Ang Saw Ean. Nair is a former Singapore lawyer who is now charged with insulting a public servant and has already spent a year in jail. He could be faced with one year in prison.
It may be one of the most unexpected verdicts of the year. Geoffrey Fieger and law partner Ven Johnson were acquitted on all charges after an 18 day trial on illegal campaign contributions. The jury deliberated for four days to reach the verdict. It is a major loss for the Justice Department given what seemed an over-whelming case with cooperating witnesses and massive effort. It was also a trial marred by accusations of strong-arm tactics by FBI agent, Jeffrey Rees, which may have poisoned the well for some jurors.

Fantasy baseball players rejoice. The fantasy continues. The Supreme Court refused to hear the appeal in Major League Baseball Advanced Media v. C.B.C., 07-1099 — letting stand a ruling in favor of fantasy baseball businesses. A Tampa case may present an ideal context to review the long-criticized pornography test and the role of community standards in the Internet age. Paul F. Little, known as “Max Hardcore,” is facing an obscenity prosecution for selling porn on the Internet. The Bush Administration could have chosen any state in the Union, but engineered an indictment in Tampa — an open case of forum shopping for the most conservative jury pool that it could find. The Supreme Court has never produced a coherent and consistent approach to obscenity and this case is the result of this long-standing judicial failure. It was hard to imagine anything more disturbing than the story that was posted a couple weeks ago about Rand, a 17-year-old girl, was killed by her father (and her brothers) for simply falling in love with a young British soldier. While still a virgin, her father Abdel-Qader Ali, 46, still strangled her after she confided her feeling of Paul to a friend. Now her mother, Leila, who went public with the murder and divorced the father, has been gunned down while trying to flee to Jordon.

There is a very interesting controversy brewing in Orange County, Florida. A 13-year-old girl Alisha Dean has a MySpace page that portrays herself as a 19-year-old divorced woman. She has been accused about lying to two men — Morris Williams, 22, and Darwin Mills, 24, about her age in two separate incidents. Both have been convicted and sent to jail for statutory rape — regardless of whether the older looking girl deceived them. While her parents admit that they did not take down the MySpace page and that she still stays out late at night, her father insists that minors are not expected to have the same judgment as adults.

Parents across Minnesota this morning are searching for switches. The state supreme court has held that parents who spanked their son with a paddle did not commit a crime. The case began when Shawn Fraser decided to paddle his son Gerard for running away from home — using a wooden paddle 36 times on the boy. Gerard was then 12 and weighed 195 pounds. Both parties pledged to keep their supporters in line during the Democratic rules committee meeting on Saturday. However, after the committee agreed to seat all of the Michigan and Florida delegates with half of their votes, some Clinton supporters erupted in anger. I was invited to attend the meeting but had to decline due to litigation demands, but it appears to have been quite a scene. This video of Clinton supporter Harriet Christian’s rant against the “inadequate black man” indicates that the ongoing campaign is clearly hurting chances for November for the party. On Thursday, an abusive arrest of a journalist was recorded in Alalbuquerque, New Mexico. The video is below. In the clip, APD Officer Daniel Guzman appears to pummel KOB-TV cameraman Rick Foley after telling him to move to a different location. Not only is Foley arrested without cause but $50,000 in camera equipment is reportedly ruined.

A French court in Lille, France has annulled the marriage of a young Muslim after the husband discovered on his wedding night that his bribe was not a virgin. The French court agreed that the lack of virginity was sufficient for an annulment in a decision drawing considerable criticism in France.
